Finding the best care possible

According to the global data platform Statista, the number of hospitals worldwide will reach 215,977 by 2026. To help prospective patients find the best care possible, the New York-based weekly magazine Newsweek and the German platform Statista developed the World’s Best Hospitals 2025 ranking. (The complete list is available here.)

This year’s ranking lists the best hospitals in 30 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. Newsweek and Statista selected these countries based on multiple comparability factors, such as standard of living, life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals, and data availability.

Ten Swiss hospitals in top 250

After evaluating more than 2,400 hospitals, the first five places went to the Mayo Clinic – Rochester and the Cleveland Clinic in the US, the Canadian Toronto General – University Health Network, the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US, and the Swedish Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset.

Besides Zurich, Basel, and Lausanne, the University Hospital of Geneva is ranked 53rd, and the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich is ranked 65th. The ranking puts the Lindenhofspital in Bern at #123 and the Claraspital in Basel at #124. The Inselspital in Bern also made it into the top 250 in 152nd place, the Hirslanden Clinic in Aarau in 158th place, and the Clinique Générale-Beaulieu in Geneva in 244th place.

Japan also represented well

There are 14 hospitals in Japan among the World’s Best Hospitals 2025, of which six made it into the top 100: The University of Tokyo Hospital was ranked #16, St. Luke’s International Hospital at #36, Kameda Medical Center at #58, Kyushu University Hospital at #81, Nagoya University Hospital at #91, and Keio University Hospital at #98.

The extensive evaluation process included an online survey of thousands of doctors, hospital managers, and health care professionals, patient experience data, hospital quality metrics, and a patient-reported outcome measures’ implementation survey. The latter uses standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.
