Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Swiss technology group ABB and Nippon Express have opened the ABB Tokyo Service Workshop in Shinagawa, marking the first dedicated service facility in Japan for ABB’s Electrification business.
The new facility, announced on September 7, is located within a Nippon Express warehouse in Tokyo’s Shinagawa district and will provide technical support, after-sales services, repairs, maintenance and diagnostics for ABB electrification products. It will also serve as a training and certification center for service engineers and partners, while storing testing equipment, tools and spare parts for customers across Japan.
The investment comes as Japan faces rapidly growing electricity demand driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence, data centers, semiconductor manufacturing and renewable energy infrastructure. As electrical installations become increasingly sophisticated and large-scale, demand is also growing for specialized maintenance expertise, reliable access to spare parts and solutions that minimize equipment downtime.
The Tokyo workshop is designed to address these challenges by bringing several functions under one roof. Engineers will be able to conduct demonstrations and testing on ABB equipment, including medium- and low-voltage switchgear, while training technicians locally in Japan. Its location provides another strategic advantage. The facility is close to Tokyo Port, Oi Container Terminal, JR Freight’s Tokyo Freight Terminal and Haneda Airport, while benefiting from Nippon Express’ domestic and international logistics network.
The workshop builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. ABB and Nippon Express have previously collaborated on the transportation, installation, assembly and maintenance of ABB equipment. Under the expanded partnership, ABB will combine its electrification technology and technical expertise with Nippon Express’ capabilities in procurement, customs clearance, transportation, storage and installation.
The opening represents a further strengthening of ABB’s presence in Japan at a time when reliable and efficient power infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for some of the country’s fastest-growing industries.
